It is an offence for a person to contravene the Zebra, Pelican and Puffin Pedestrian Crossings Regulations 1997.

Toucan, Equestrian and other Signal-controlled Crossings

Section 36 Road Traffic Act 1988 - level 3 fine + 3 points if motor vehicle - NOIP - fixed penalty - summary offence

It is an offence for a person to fail to comply with a red traffic light, or requirements relating to stopping and overtaking with the controlled area B of a crossing.

Requirements

Pedestrians - Loitering on a crossing

Regulation 19 Zebra, Pelican and Puffin Pedestrian Crossings Regulations 1997

No pedestrian shall remain on the carriageway within the limits of a crossing A longer than is necessary for that pedestrian to pass over the crossing with reasonable despatch. (see note )

Stopping vehicles on a crossing

Regulation 18 Zebra, Pelican and Puffin Pedestrian Crossings Regulations 1997

The driver of a vehicle shall not cause the vehicle or any part of a vehicle to stop within the limits of a crossing A unless :-

  • he is prevented from proceeding by circumstances beyond his control, or
  • it is necessary for him to stop to avoid injury or damage to persons or property.
